Frequently asked questions
When you place points around your field's border on the map, the tool projects your Latitude and Longitude coordinates onto a local flat-plane system in meters. It then calculates the exact size in square meters using a standard surveyor's shoelace formula and converts it to acres, hectares, or bigha.
Crop fields, trees, water channels, and farm paths are easily visible from space but are not marked on standard road maps. Switching to the satellite view allows you to see the real physical borders of your fields so you can place your points accurately.
Yes, the calculator uses state-specific conversion factors. A bigha is not a uniform unit across India: for instance, a bigha in Uttar Pradesh is about 0.625 acres, whereas a bigha in Madhya Pradesh is 0.25 acres. By selecting your state, the tool converts your exact drawn acreage into the correct regional unit.
Knowing the exact acreage is necessary for: (1) calculating seeds and fertilizers, avoiding waste or shortage, (2) applying for Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans which are calculated per acre, (3) registering for government crop insurance programs (PMFBY) where premiums and payouts depend on the insured area.
