What is Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)?
PMFBY provides comprehensive crop insurance to protect farmers when notified crops are damaged by non-preventable natural risks.
Farmers pay a small share of the premium: generally 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops and 5% for commercial/horticultural crops: while the government subsidises the rest.
Eligibility
- Farmers growing notified crops in notified areas
- Both loanee and non-loanee farmers (enrolment is voluntary)
- Sharecroppers and tenant farmers (subject to documentation)
Benefits
- Low farmer premium; government subsidises the balance
- Cover for yield loss, certain localised calamities and post-harvest losses (as notified)
- Helps farmers recover and continue farming after a bad season

Application process
Step 1. Enrol before the cut-off
Apply through your bank, a CSC, the insurance company or the national crop-insurance portal before the seasonal deadline.
Step 2. Pay your share
Pay the farmer premium for your notified crop and area.
Step 3. Report losses
In case of damage, report within the prescribed window to initiate assessment.
